After deciding to shift more into street photography I started looking for a change from my 2 kg heavy DSLR gear. The natural first thought was an iPhone. I love street photos in black & white, and was surprised that there was no camera app that produced beautiful black & white images and had a real-time preview. So I decided to make one.

Here it is, Argentum Camera, the first camera app built with street photographers in mind that creates stunning black & white images inspired by the classics of black & white photography.

Argentum Camera's interface is inspired by the materials, colors and design of the classical film cameras from the 70s and 80s. It is simple, but functional, not completely flat, not totally following the trend, a balance between the modern sleekness and the classical forms.

It is also the first camera interface that is made with the larger iPhones in mind. In the landscape mode the interface adapts to the shift in the handling and the shutter button moves to the end of the panel placing it right under the photographer's thumb.

Every other design element brought into the app has a functional purpose. The EV compensation scale reminiscent of the classical cameras look makes it easier to select the exact value for your shot. The narrow bar in the bottom changes its size and color depending on the amount of free space.

Argentum processes the images in real time applying one of the six filters. Each inspired by the classics of black and white photography, such as Ansel Adams, Henri Cartier-Bresson, Irving Penn, Garry Winogrand, Yousuf Karsh and Dorothea Lange.

Seemingly simple at first sight, Argentum is rich in functionality and can tailor to specific needs of photographers.

Two additional shooting modes create a versatile experience matching the current photographer’s mood and end goal. The speed shooting mode is fully automatic and turns the whole screen into a shutter button, so taking a photo becomes a matter of a split second. Speed shooting is especially useful for a street photographer on a hunt for the perfect subject. The double exposure mode opens up more creative possibilities for a deeper exploration of a subject. It lets you superimpose two different images in a single photo with real-time preview.

Argentum also boasts two features common in the DSLR cameras that are typically ignored on mobile devices.

Instant preview lets you take a quick look at the photo you just took right after pressing the shutter button. A second or even less is enough to validate the light and focus is on point in the shot just made, and you don’t need to go all the way to the gallery for this.

The Sleep timer is a unique feature that makes Argentum go into power saving mode after a certain period of inactivity. The screen dims saving the battery and blocks all controls so you can freely carry your phone in your hand without waking the camera back up. When that perfect photo moment comes around a simple press on one of the volume buttons, or a tap on any button in the Watch app, gets the camera up and running instantly. No more missed shots!

Argentum is still quite new on the market. And while it hasn’t reached the top of the AppStore just yet, it did acquire a loyal and very outspoken audience of photographers who use it every day. So far there have been over 120.000 photos taken with Argentum all over the world and some of the photographers went as far as to include Argentum made photos into their exhibitions. We are now hard at work brainstorming more improvements to keep up with our mission of building the perfect camera app for street photographers.
